The origins of the group

Together with the love for the drums, my fascination with the compositional side of music guided me in a musical path where I divided my energies between the studies as a performer and those concerning harmony and arranging. This group is the natural consequence of it.

I met Aurelien first and was impressed of his proficiency on the guitar, his rhythmic phrasing and the variety of styles he can play. Then found Nikolay and Pau, I immediately liked the excitement in Nikolay’s playing and his ideas, while Pau struck me with his “harmonic solutions”, warm, gentle feel and remarkable touch on the piano: I thought it would have worked perfectly for my music and as a glue to join Aurelien’s and Nikolay’s sounds as well.
Now I was only missing a bass player, and for a while I couldn’t come up with anybody who I believed would have matched the setting of the group. Finally I thought about Marco, I did thanks to Momoko Hayashi, a great pianist and talented composer/arranger with whom I had done some studio recording in February the same year.

She met him in California because he was the bassist of an orchestra that played one of her arrangements. I remembered about Marco from my first days at Berklee, I think he graduated when I was doing my first semester but we didn’t meet at that time. I listened to one of his concerts though and I knew he was groovy! He is a gifted bassist, solid when working to support the group and very melodic and expressive as a soloist.

I think I was lucky to meet these musicians, they are all very talented.

On November 2005 we got together at the Rear Window studio in Brookline, MA for a whole day, quite satisfying recording session. We came up with enough music to make a complete album that I later called Night Dancers.

Probably Modern Jazz is the term that better describes our style... or you might just quote world renowned drummer Kenwood Dennard, who worked with such musicians as Miles Davis, Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Gil Evans and Sting:

"The Material in this concert is diverse and full of artistry and grace. Some of the material successfully crosses back and forth over lines of funk and jazz. Sometimes dwelling in a middle ground where the listener is forced to listen and think".
